Hotel-Motel tax passes

State fuel tax fizzles 510 to 78

by C.F. David

The voters of Cimarron County, in a margin of 124 votes decided to place a five-percent tax on the county's hostelries.

The Cimarron County Commissioners had, in a plea to the voters asked that the funds raised be used to free up other monies in the capital funds.

The county, with more untaxed school land than any other in the state, is cash strapped.

State Question 723, placing an earmarked tax on gasoline and diesel fuel for highway repairs, failed to pass in Cimarron County, 510 to 78.

The tax, if passed would phase in gradually over three years, finally adding fives cents to a gallon of gasoline and eight to a gallon of diesel.
