An elderly Luthern Church-Missouri Synod pastor was asked many years ago about where was the most beautiful place to be.
He replied, “Wherever there are souls!” What do you think about Boise City?
God's Word tells us that the first person to build a city was Cain, son of Adam and Eve, “Cain lay with his wife, and she became pregnant and gave birth to Enoch.”
Cain was then building a city, and he named it for his son Enoch, (Gen. 4:17). As we know Cain was the world's first murderer. It was in the city of Enoch that he had killed his brother Abel.
What is the connection between cities and murder? Is there a town or city anywhere in which at least one murder has not been comitted. Look at the murder and mayhem last week in Atlanta and Milwaukee.
Where people live in close proimity to one another, small irritations can grow into major grievances and out of control rages. Road rage is an example becoming common nationwide. sin is still at the bottom of it all.
Hostility toward God and His will is not because of population density. It is because of humankind's fallen sinful nature, (Romans 8:7).
Jesus knew perfectly well the danger he faced when he entered the city of Jerusalem. He was fully aware that even the “Holy City” was a place of murder.
Remember Christ's words, “O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophet, and stone those sent to you,” (Luke 13:34).
Why did Jesus go there? He went out of love for Adam, Eve, Cain, Abel, Osama bin Laden, Michael Jackson and everyone who lived, now lives, or will live on this planet; out of eternal love for all sinners.
When Jesus got to Jerusalem, the greatest sacrifice ever made, the dearest price ever paid, took place in the crucifixion on Calvary's Cross.
Because Christ died on Calvary's Cross and rose from the dead, we can confidently face any danger wherever God has called us to live. He is with us upon the High Plains and in a city. Isn't that wonderful news?
On some sunny morning, or snowy evening, or whatever the weather, Jesus will come again and lead us to another city, the heavenly Jerusalem, where murder is no more. He take us to live eternally around “...the throne of God's Lamb who forever takes away the sins of the world.”
Now what was that about the best place to be? It's Heaven!
By the way did you know that God also loves Achmed's camels in Iraq?
Forgiveness of sins is still at the center of Christ's church!
