Accidents close Highway 287
A personal injury collision occurred at 3:30 p.m. on Nov. 29, 2006 on U.S. Highway 287, four miles north of Boise City in Cimarron County .
A 2001 jeep driven by Lafe Luis Hernandez, 28, of San Jose , Calif. overturned about two and two-tenths miles north of Boise City .
Hernandez was north bound traveling too fast for conditions and slid off the roadway to the left side and rolled vehicle one-and one-half times.
Seatbelts were equipped and in use.
The weather consisted of light snowfall. The roadway was icy, and visibility was poor.
Hernandez was transported to Cimarron Memorial Hospital and admitted with head injuries. He was listed in stable condition. Shortly after this accident and two others, the decision was made by Acting Lt. Duane Johnson to close the highway. It remained closed for about five hours.
The other accidents involved semi-trailer trucks, one near the Colorado state line and another at the intersection of Highways 287 and 56 just over the overpass.
The accident was investigated by OHP Trooper Adrian Carrillo of the Boise City detachment, he was assisted by the Boise City E. M. S. and the Cimarron County Sheriff's Office.
